Polar bodies are the by-products of the egg’s cell division that can be used to determine the genetic quality of your eggs prior to in-vitro-fertilisation.


A polar body biopsy is indicated for women who are at risk of transmitting a genetic disease (monogenetic disorders) or a chromosomal aberration (aneuploidy).

All polar body biopsies for monogenetic disorders will be performed in co-operation with our colleague Dr. Hehr, a specialist in human genetics.

In August 2004, the first baby conceived after polar body biopsy was born in Germany. The requsted genetic diagnosis for the monogenetic disorder, the “Norrie Syndrome”, had been performed at our center in Regensburg.

Polar Body Biopsy for Aneuploidy Screening

All polar body biopsies for aneuploidy screnning are performed in co-operation with our colleague, Assistant Professor Dr. Buchholz, Centre for Polar Body Analysis of Munich.

Polar body with normal chromosomes 13 (red), 16 (blue), 18 (pink), 21 (green) and 22 (yellow). Following the diagnostic procedure, the analysed egg cell can be assessed as healthy and suitable for fertilisation.
